Lunch and Learn: Fireflies
Ben Pfeiffer explains why fireflies flash, and how they use light to communicate.
Coffee, tea and cookies provided. Feel free to bring a sack lunch.
Pfeiffer is founder of firefly.org.
He’s a firefly (Lampyridae) researcher who studied biology at Texas State University.
Pfeiffer’s work includes researching Texas firefly species. He’s currently working on a master list of Texas and Southwest lampyrid species, and created his website to assist in his research and raise awareness about the decline of firefly populations in Texas, the US and worldwide.
The site is intended to help educate those interested in bringing back fireflies to their area and serve as a resource for those interested in learning more about fireflies.
Firefly.org has been fortunate to have been mentioned and interviewed many times over the years by Nasa.gov, National Wildlife Foundation, Smithsonian Magazine, Examiner.com, Wikipedia, CBS Morning News, Alleghenyfront.org, The Indianapolis Star, This Old House Magazine, Cibolo Nature Center, Maplewood Nature Center, Herald-Zeitung, The Fireflies Book, and many more.
