How have recent policy changes impacted the humanitarian crisis at the border and what can residents do to address this crisis?
Community Organizer Adriana Quiroga from the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) discusses these topics at a public forum hosted by the League of Women Voters of the Comal Area (LWVCA) Nov. 11, 6.p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Westside Community Center, 2932 S IH Frontage Road, New Braunfels, TX 78130.
RAICES is the largest nonprofit legal service provider in Texas and a national voice for immigrant rights.
Quiroga joined RAICES as a paralegal two years ago, serving unaccompanied minors, refugee and immigrant families.
Now as a Community Organizer, her mission is to engage the immigrant community to better advocate for themselves. LWVCA Treasurer and the LWV Texas Immigration Issue Chair Gloria Suarez Sasser organized the Nov. 11 forum.
Sasser explains that consistent with RAICES’ work, the national League’s position on immigration is “policies should promote reunification of immediate families; meet the economic, business and employment needs of the United States; be responsive to those facing political persecution or humanitarian crises and ensure fair treatment under the law for all persons.
“This forum is an opportunity for Comal Area residents to hear what’s happening right now with the humanitarian
crisis on our border beyond what’s reported in the media.”
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages the informed and active participation in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy. LWV never supports or opposes candidates for office, or political parties. LWVCA serves Comal and Guadalupe Counties. For more information, visit www.lwvcomal.org.
