Expect Juneteenth Freedom Day Holiday Closures Thursday in Canyon Lake, New Braunfels

Expect closures on Thursday, June 19, in celebration of Juneteenth Freedom Day, which became a federal holiday in 2021.

Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. It honors the history and journey of African Americans.

In Canyon Lake, Tye Preston Memorial Library and CRRC of Canyon Lake’s Rec Center, Food Pantry and Thrift Store will close.

All Comal ISD campuses and district offices will close in observance of the holiday.

Comal County offices and the courthouse will be open for business.

New Braunfels closures include City Hall, Municipal Court, all New Braunfels Public Library branches, New Braunfels Parks and Recreation administrative offices, Fischer Park Nature Education Center, Solid Waste and Recycling administrative offices, City Recycling Center and New Braunfels Civic/Convention Center.

Residential and commercial garbage-and-recycling services in New Braunfels remain unchanged.

New Braunfels Utilities will close all of its offices.

The city will officially celebrate Juneteenth from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 21 at the Westside Library and Community Center.

Bishop Michael Franklin with New Braunfels MLK Association, Inc. is the featured speaker.

According to Mary Elliott, curator of American Slavery at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, “Juneteenth” is a play on the date of June 19, 1865. The Union Army under the leadership of Gen. Gordon Granger, made its way into Galveston to announce to the people of Texas that all enslaved African Americans were free.
