Senior Braxdon Sayles will attend fire school on a full ride after successfully answering questions from Canyon Lake firefighters.

Canyon Lake High School’s Braxdon Sayles is the winner of this year’s “full-ride scholarship” to the Texas Fire academy.

Canyon Lake Professional Firefighters Association (CLPFFA), which made the announcement on Wednesday, will pay for the graduating senior’s emergency medical technician (EMT) and fire school next month.

Sayles begins his education in January.

On Dec. 18 CLPFFA scheduled interview and physical-fitness testing to stimulate a mock departmental interview during the scholarship process.

“CLPFFA is proud to sponsor this scholarship that will provide the funds for a local student to start their career as a firefighter/EMT,” Charles Richard, sergeant-at-arms, said.

The group also sponsored a fundraiser at Las Barcas Mexican restaurant on Saturday to raise funds for a local mother’s unborn child, who will require surgery three days after birth.

Firefighters raised $500 for surgical fees and donated three bags of diapers, baby formula, blankets and other newborn essentials.

On Dec. 16, they dropped off toys for students at Startzville Elementary School. On Dec. 10, the firefighters left donated toys at Canyon Lake Kids Academy.
