It’s legal to sell, possess and use fireworks in unincorporated Comal County this week even though the burn ban remains in effect.
County Public Information Officer Cary Zayas said state law dictates when fireworks can be banned. Only cities can make ordinances prohibiting the use and sale of fireworks.
There are no official fireworks displays planned for Canyon Lake. Fireworks are banned inside New Braunfels city limits.
Federal law makes it illegal to launch fireworks from any park or boat ramp owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).
Residents are urged to exercise care when handling fireworks to prevent accidents or fires, be mindful of pets easily frightened by loud noises, and to show consideration for neighbors and community to “help keep the peace as we welcome 2025.”
Zayas said fireworks safety tips include:
- Never allowing children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers.
- Only purchasing and setting off fireworks labeled for consumer (not professional) use.
- Keeping a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.
- Lighting fireworks one at a time then moving back quickly.
- Never trying to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them with water and throw them away.
- Never pointing or throwing fireworks (including sparklers) at anyone.
- After fireworks complete their burning, to prevent a trash fire, dousing spent devices with water from a bucket or hose before discarding them.
