This Sunday, Jen Crownover, Comal County Commissioner, Pct. 4, will read a proclamation celebrating the 50th anniversary of First Baptist Church Canyon Lake.
But the big news is the groundbreaking ceremony that follows, where Crownover and others will pick up shovels to inaugurate contruction of a new 15,000-square-foot building that includes a large, secure area for children and preschoolers plus a fellowship hall with seating of almost 300.
“We’re celebrating the past and looking to the future,” said Peter Hill, senior adults/missions pastor.
Groundbreaking follows the 11 a.m. Sunday service at 12:15 p.m. at the church, 13085 FM 306, Canyon Lake. Dinner follows on the church grounds.
Hill, who arrived in Canyon Lake from Dallas 18 months ago, said approximately 300 people attend First Baptist’s Sunday service. Wednesday nights are another big draw, attracting 150 children, teens and parents.
The church operates the successful “Awana” program which attracts about 150 kids, teens and adults each week.
“We want to be known for who we are in terms of grace and sharing God’s love,” Hill said of First Baptist, which is a Southern Baptist church.
Hill said membership reflects the greater Canyon Lake community. Regular worshippers include bikers with tattoos, residents of gated communities, and families with children.
When First Baptist Church Canyon Lake was founded, it was known as Canyon Lake Baptist Fellowship.
“‘Fellowship’ is really more indicative of who we are,” Hill said.
