Residents concerned about a wastewater permit that would greenlight an 850-home development near Fischer are invited to learn how to protest Lennar Homes’ application to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 at Devil’s Backbone Tavern, 4041 FM 32, Fischer.

The meeting is sponsored by Fischer Neighbors, a community group, and the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance (GEAA), a nonprofit advocacy organization focused on protecting and preserving the Edwards Aquifer, its springs, associated watersheds, and the Texas Hill Country that sustains them.

GEAA Technical Director Nathan Glavy and environmental attorney Lauren Ice are the featured speakers.

Lennar plans to build and operate a wastewater treatment plant southeast of the intersection of FM 484 and Rocky Ranch Rd.

The plant would discharge up to 600,000 gallons of treated effluent per day into an unnamed intermittent tributary, then into Potter Creek and ultimately into Canyon Lake (Segment No. 1805) in the Guadalupe River Basin.

Designated uses for that area include primary contact recreation, public water supply, aquifer protection, and exceptional aquatic-life use.

“Opposition to this permit is grounded in the significant community concern around its potential negative impact on groundwater quality and quantity and other negative impacts to the ecological well-being, quality of life, and long-term property values of the area,” GEAA Executive Director Annalisa Peace said in a statement.

The Jan. 20 meeting precedes a TCEQ public hearing 7 p.m. Feb. 10 at Canyon Lake High School.
