A fox that came into contact with a cat in the area of Raven Lane, Bulverde, tested positive for the rabies virus.

This is the eighteenth confirmed rabies case in Comal County this year, Comal County spokesperson Cary Zayas said in a statement today.

Residents in the affected and neighboring areas are urged to avoid contact with skunks, foxes, other wildlife and unfamiliar animals, particularly if they exhibit unusual behavior.

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system and is typically transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal.

A person or mammal can contract rabies when bitten or if the animal’s saliva comes into contact with their eyes, nose, mouth, or an open wound.

It is important to promptly report any animal bites or potential exposures to the local rabies control authority, Comal County Animal Control, at 830-608-2016.

If bitten, scratched or otherwise exposed to an animal, immediately wash the affected area with soap and water and seek medical advice. If the animal’s location is known, report it to Animal Control as soon as possible.

Pet owners must also ensure that their pets are vaccinated against rabies, as required by state law.
