The Canyon Lake Area Chamber will cut the blue ribbon on its own new facility at a grand opening scheduled from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21.
The 1,803-square-foot new building is located at the site of the old chamber headquarters, 3934 FM 2673, Canyon Lake. The facility will serve as a welcome center with one office dedicated to the chamber.
The old building was moved to a new location in Canyon Lake by Sullivan Realty to be fixed up and repurposed.
“We built a beautiful new facility and are very proud of that,” said Kim Collora, executive director of the Canyon Lake Area Chamber.
Two years ago, the chamber’s 30-year-old facility was in dire need of major repairs.
Volunteer Sheila Bartram suggested the chamber finance a new building by selling six of the 10 surrounding acres it owned.
After Comal County commissioners replatted the acreage, the land sold for $417,000. It cost the chamber $385,000 to build the new facility.
Board treasurer Terry Harris, with Harris Hardrock Trenching, served as general contractor for the project. The building was completed with the help of other chamber members, who provided 95% of the labor needed.
Collora said 50-100 people visit the chamber monthly to learn more about the Canyon Lake area. That number falls to around 30-50 people during the off-season.
Many of those visitors are ‘Winter Texans’ who leave the north to enjoy the area’s balmier temperatures before returning to their homes in the spring.
