Canyon Lake’s 10th year of competition starts this week as the three Fall sports teams start preparing for competition.

The Hawk’s Volleyball squad scrimmages against Blanco on Friday while both the Cross Country and Football crews start getting in shape on Monday.

Cross Country will be running against a stacked deck again this year, as the schools in District 27-4A are at the top with all four schools having a good group of runners.

The Hawks will have several runners with another year of experience as they will begin to make a dent in a league loaded with good distance athletes.

Canyon Lake started competing 10 years ago, but remember that the first year of varsity contests, the Hawks, only had one team that actually counted their wins and losses that first season.

Football has been the only sport counting that first season of games with a 1-9 record was recorded in the record books.

Canyon Lake Volleyball has a stellar, 180-138 all time record not counting that first year of competition.

Even if the Hawks started with a year of being 20 games under .500 that first season, it would not matter as this sport would still be resting above water.

The Football crew is 11 games under .500 and if you took that first year of games off the books then, Canyon Lake, would have a great chance of breaking that .500 watermark.

Volleyball lost some good players but they will also be bringing a bunch of athletes with a ton of talent with those Sub-Varsity teams that has been putting up some good marks the past few years.

Depth will be a strength with several players that will be playing on the Junior Varsity that in previous Hawk seasons would be on the Varsity.

A 90-34 record these past three campaigns will give this team a lot of momentum starting this season. During those same 3 years, a district record of 27-5 is even more impressive.

Canyon Lake had a 5-27 district mark the previous three years before this streak started. That about face has been an impressive showing as the goals have changed from making the playoffs to making the 3rd round of the playoffs and beyond.

This year’s football team has been ranked 18th in the State according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine and The Texas High School Coaches Association Coaches PreSeason Poll has your Hawks tied for 5th for the Region IV, Division I rankings.
