Public hearings for Comal County’s recommended 2019 budget and tax rate are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21 at the county courthouse, 100 Main Plaza.

A separate public hearing about the tax rate is set for 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28.

Tax rate will be approved at Commissioners Court meeting on Thursday, Sept. 13.

County Judge Sherman Krause recommended a $108.8 million budget at the Aug. 2 Comal County Commissioners Court meeting. The 2018 approved budget was $93.38 million.

Topping off the record-setting budget are initial payments needed for radio equipment and voting machines; salaries for 76 new employees, including 63 for the new jail; debt repayments for capital projects like the new jail and courthouse renovations; and a three-percent cost-of-living adjustment for all county employees.

The tax rate remains unchanged at 35.79 cents per $100 of property value, or about $716 per year on a $200,00 home. According to a press release from Comal county, this is a $40 increase from the 2018 budget.

the herald zeitung the budget increase is only an 8.6% increase from the adopted budget of $93.4 million for 2018 and being an increase of $15.4million dollars. Actually, the proposed budget of $108.8million dollars is a STAGGERING 16.490% INCREASE over the previous budget of $93.4 million dollars and the county project that to equate to only a $40.00 increase on a $200,000.00 home…. HA!

Tax rate may have remained the same, but valuations took an unprecedented jump. Guess that’s why the County Commissioners are receiving such astronomical salaries…….especially for part time jobs!
