Heavy Rains Prompt Temporary Closure of Comal River

Heavy rains this afternoon forced New Braunfels Police Department (NBPD) to temporarily close recreational access to the Comal River.
The river’s flow rate surged to 450 cubic feet-per-second (cfs) as heavy thunderstorms worked their way through New Braunfels, resulting in poor water clarity and water flowing over the Tube Chute Dam.
More storms — some possibly severe — are on the way over the next several days, according to the U.S. National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio.
“Those ongoing weather factors will play a role in future decisions made by city officials,” New Braunfels police said on Facebook.
“River flows and debris conditions at the Tube Chute will be reevaluated periodically over the next several days in order to make a determination about when river recreation can resume,” NBPD said.
