Twenty-two-year old Devon Walton of Houston died after going under water in the Comal River around 4 p.m. on Friday, May 30.
In a statement on Saturday, New Braunfels Police Department said officers working the Comal River near the Tube Chute were approached by Walton’s friends, who said she had gone under water, resurfaced and was having trouble breathing.
Officers who investigated said although she was showing signs of labored breathing, Walton was conscious, alert and able to talk.
They tended to the Houston woman until paramedics with New Braunfels Fire and EMS arrived, but by that time she was unconscious and unresponsive.
Walton was transported by EMS to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital-New Braunfels where she was pronounced dead.
Next of kin has been notified. Comal County Pct. 3 Justice of the Peace Mike Rust has ordered an autopsy.
The statement did not say whether Walton was swimming, tubing, or going down the chute when she went under.
