Did you know that Comal County sits atop one of the most biodiverse aquifer ecosystems in the world, with bizarre aquifer-dwelling species that occur nowhere else?

Renowned international cave and karst expert George Veni, Ph.D., will explain what lies beneath and more during “Comal County, Texas: Opportunities and Challenges within the International Year of Caves & Karst” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9 at a virtual meeting of the Comal County Conservation Alliance (CCCA).

Veni is executive director of the National Cave & Karst Research Institute in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and president of the International Union of Speleology, the “United Nations” of cave exploration and study.

CCCA said Comal County sits along the edge of the Edwards Plateau, one of the largest karst areas in the country, and over the Edwards and Trinity aquifer systems which provide water for more than two million people.

Comal County’s karst also contains the longest cave in Texas.

“Dr. Veni will make us proud as he puts Comal County’s karst in a national and global context,” CCCA said.
