Boat Ramp #18, the only Canyon Lake boat ramp still open to the public, will close Friday, Nov. 1 due to low water levels and safety concerns.
Canyon Lake is evaporating because of prolonged drought. On Oct. 18, levels dropped to 883 feet, the ramp’s low-water closure elevation.
“Since that time, we have monitored daily ramp conditions and (the) remaining concrete ramp area,” the Water Oriented Recreation District of Comal County (WORD) said on social media. “Recognizing that this was the last open boat ramp, we left it accessible with a warning that it was use at your own risk and extreme caution advised.”
Today, the lake is at 882.44 feet and 52.6% full. Less than 14 feet of ramp remain and there is a severe drop-off at the end of the ramp.
WORD said the ramp is no longer safe for launching watercraft, but it will reconsider reopening it if lake levels rise in the months ahead.
Boat Ramp #18 is located inside the 485-acre Canyon Park, which also closes on Friday and reopens in March.
After Friday, the only one of Canyon Lake’s 23 boat ramps still open is #19 at Canyon Lake Marina, which is privately owned.
