League Elects New Officers

Share

The League of Women Voters of the Comal Area (LWV-CA) elected new directors and officers at its annual meeting Thursday, May 17, in New Braunfels.

New Texas State President Grace Chimene was the keynote speaker.

She urged area members to seek new partnerships and use new technologies to defend democracy and promote voting.

“In 1919, the League was founded here in Texas,” Chimene said. “That was not the end but rather a beginning. We secured the right to vote and then we continued to work to ensure other citizens had equal access to their freedom to vote. Today the League empowers all voters to improve their local, state, and national governments.”

LWVCA President Roxanna Deane said the local organization was busy last year, developing

    • public forums on County Authority, Land Use and Maternal Mortality;
    • conducting voter registrations drives, Voter Guides;
    • and building partnerships with the Greater Edwards Aquifer Authority and Hill Country Alliance to form the Comal County Conservation Alliance.

Deane says LWVCA will become more even more active in 2018-19 by providing voter registration and election information, advocating for land, water and wildlife conservation and supporting gun safety measures.

She also recognized the contributions of retiring Vice President for Organization Darlene Hicks, a charter member and past president of LWVCA, and past president of the LWV of Texas; and retiring Membership Chair Bonnie Leitch.

Elected for two year terms from June 2018- May 2020 were Vice President for Organization Dawn Medeiros, Vice President for Program Kathie Jinks, Treasurer Gloria Suarez Sasser, Director for Publicity Jerrie Champlin, Membership Chair Jenny Ayala, Nominating Committee Chair Fran Hargrove, and Nominating Committee Sandi Parks and Jenny Ayala.

They join President Roxanna Deane, Co-Vice Presidents for Voter Services Robin Engel and Susan Herr, Secretary Betty Colley and Director Janyth Frederickson, whose terms continue through May 2019.
