Infamous La Niña dry weather conditions are settling in for the winter, and there is little hope for rain over the next several months in the drought-stricken Canyon Lake area.

The U.S. National Weather Service’s Western Gulf River Forecast Center and the U.S. Drought Monitor today said La Niña weather will continue through April, usually the best time for precipitation to fall in The Big Bend and Hill Country areas.

They are expected to “degrade” into severe and extreme categories, very bad news for Canyon Lake, which is only 49.6% full at 880.3 feet.

“There does not appear to be any help expected in the next month,” the agencies said in a joint statement on social media.

There is a below-normal chance of normal precipitation in the areas most affected by the drought.

Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority (GBRA) is expected this month to declare Stage IV drought restrictions when water levels fall below 880 feet, forcing wholesale water customers to curtail their usage by 15%.
