League of Women Voters-Comal Area and Westside Community Center will sponsor a seminar at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 to highlight experiences and legal processes for women and children from Central America detained while seeking asylum after crossing the Texas border.
Rev. Helen Boursier, Ph.D — who served at a Canyon Lake church — and Fatima Menendez, staff attorney for Refugree and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) are the featured speakers. They work closely with these immigrants.
The meeting will take place at the Westside Community Center, 2932 South IH-35 Frontage Rd., New Braunfels.
“There is a lot of public attention on immigration right now,” says LWV-CA President Roxanna Deane. “We need to learn more about these particular immigrants. Why are they seeking asylum, and how does the legal process work?”
Boursier worked inside Karnes City and Dilley detention centers in south Texas. Most of the women and children detained there are fleeing violence in Central America and Texas. Menendez will explain the process U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) uses when detaining or releasing an immigrant; the type of visas available for victims of abuse or human trafficking; and the process of seeking asylum.
The meeting is free and open to the public.
