LWVCA Explains Redistricting Heading into Texas’ 87th Legislative Session

Should Texas voters choose their representatives or should representatives choose their voters?
League of Women Voters of the Comal Area (LWVCA) hosts a livestream Facebook and Zoom discussion at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20 with Fair Maps Texas spokesperson and LWV Texas Redistricting Issue Chair Stephanie Swanson.
Swanson will discuss how legislative districts are drawn in Texas and what Texans can do to ensure the public is part of the process.
She’ll also provide updates on the latest court cases, the Texas 87th Legislative Session (which opened on Jan. 12) and the potential impact on local legislative districts.
“Our goal is to help people understand the importance of the redistricting process and provide information on what actions they can take,” said LWVCA Program Director Daphne Spraitzar. “Our electoral system is founded on the principle that every American has the right to equal representation and is guaranteed the freedom to choose their own elected officials. Politicians who manipulate district lines to keep their own political party in power do not just hurt those from opposing political parties. These politicians hurt all voters by taking away voters’ ability to choose their own leaders and hold legislators accountable.
“We are advocating for a nonpartisan, open and fair process to ensure equitable representation,” she said.
