A 25-year-old Houston man drowned in Canyon Lake on Monday.

Jhonatan Zavaleta went missing near the beach area of Comal Park, which reopened to the public on May 16.

Comal County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is investigating the incident.

A man had lost his tube, tried to swim back to shore, but went underwater.

CCSO Public Information Officer Jennifer Smith said her office received a call at 4:03 p.m. that a man had lost his tube, tried to swim back to shore, but went underwater.

Friends, including Zavaleta’s girlfriend, waited five minutes before calling for help.

New Braunfels Fire Department divers recovered Zavaleta’s body shortly after 7 p.m.

Units with CCSO, Canyon Lake Fire/EMS, and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department responded to drowning.

Smith said Precinct 1 Judge Tom Clark pronounced Zavaleta dead. An autopsy has been ordered, and next of kin has been notified.
