Comal County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Auralio “AJ” Ornelas received the Community Builder Award from Canyon Lake Masonic Lodge No. 1425 today for his service to the people of Comal County.
As a school resource officer (SRO) at Mountain Valley Middle School, he built positive relationships with students, staff and families while keeping schools safe, county spokesperson Cary Zayas said.
“His commitment to mentorship, safety and community connection makes a difference every day.”
State law requires Comal ISD to place armed law-enforcement officers at all schools. SROs act as first responders for critical incidents, perform law-enforcement duties, provide education and act as mentors.
In 2023, former County Judge Sherman Kraue recognized Ornelas for his “dedication and outstanding commitment to Comal County for the past 20 years.”
