The New Braunfels Police Department (NBPD) will add patrols on city streets and along the IH-35 corridor from Wednesday, Dec. 31 to Jan. 1, 2024. to catch drunk drivers.
The grant-funded initiative is part of the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), which adds extra officers on local roadways to increase driving-while-intoxicated (DWI) arrests.
The “Impaired Driving Enforcement” program supports TxDOT’s statewide “Drink, Drive. Go to Jail” campaign, which aims to save lives by reducing the number of DWI-related crashes, injuries and fatalities.
Some 1,246 people were killed by drunk drivers on Texas roadways in 2022.
“Don’t turn your holiday event into a life-changing tragedy by drinking and driving,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “A safe and sober ride should be at the top of your list when making plans with family and friends. If not, you risk your job, your life and the lives of others. It’s just not worth it.”
