New Braunfels Mayor Rusty Brockman will “flip the switch” and turn on thousands of twinkling lights 6 p.m. Friday at downtown’s Main Plaza.

The downtown lighting marks the official start of ‘festtage’ or holiday season, said Parks and Recreation Director Stacey Dicke.

“Our beloved downtown becomes a beautiful setting of twinkling lights, holiday music and festive guests,” she said. “It is indeed the most special time of the year and is only possible with the generous contributions from our event partners.”

The annual event is sponsored by the City of New Braunfels, Comal County, New Braunfels Utilities, New Braunfels Downtown Association and H-E-B.

Streets around Main Plaza will close at 5 p.m. The program begins at 6 p.m. with a performance by the New Braunfels Community Band. Brockman will speak at 6:30 p.m. before leading the countdown and flipping the switch.

Once the lights are on, Santa is scheduled to arrive on an antique fire truck provided by the New Braunfels Fire Department. He’ll make his way to the Main Plaza bandstand for family photos. The cost is $10 each and benefits the New Braunfels Downtown Association. Cash only. Line closes at 8:30 p.m.

The New Braunfels Community and the Canyon High School Steel Drum bands will perform.

Streets reopen at 8 p.m.
