The Water Oriented Recreation District of Comal County (WORD) opened a new fishing dock and floating walkway at Canyon Park today.
Earlier this year, WORD added a playground and placed new tables near the beach. Visitors also can enjoy a new sand volleyball court, soccer goals, tetherball, and a hammock garden. On Oct. 20, 2023, the two-acre Madrone Trail Pollinator Garden opened in the park.
Texas Master Naturalists Lindheimer Chapter used native flora to create a 40,000-square-foot butterfly-shaped garden.
If/when lake water levels rise, WORD said it easily can reposition both the walkway and the fishing pier.
“There is still plenty of water in the lake and we are making every effort to put both water access and non-water amenity improvements in place within the parks to give the best possible visitor experience, but we have no control over drought conditions,” WORD said on Facebook in March.
Canyon Park also is home to the only boat ramp still open on Canyon Lake — #18. Canyon Lake Marina closed nearby #19 as it moves the dock into deeper water. The ramp is open on weekends but boaters are advised they use it at their own risk due to ongoing construction.
Admission is $5 per vehicle with Comal County registration sticker and $20 per non-Comal County registered vehicle.
