Comal Cares will open five warming centers for Comal County residents without adequate heating during the extreme cold expected this weekend, but the bad news is only NB First Footing/NB Housing Partners is open overnight and several others are closed over the weekend.

Hard freezes are expected the evenings of Saturday, Jan. 24, Sunday, Jan. 25 and Monday, Jan. 26 with wind chills in the single digits to lower teens on Saturday and Sunday.

Warming centers open when temperatures are below 45 degrees with precipitation or 40 degrees without precipitation.

NB First Footing/NB Housing Partners, 4120 Loop 337, New Braunfels, opens to the public from 5 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. during the cold snap, but will keep people sheltered until the temperature rises above 40 degrees.

The homeless shelter will reach out to anyone who needs help.

“If someone is stranded or doesn’t have transportation or a warm place, they need to call us and we’ll figure out a solution,” said Executive Director Kellie Stallings.
