Not All Canyon Lake Closures Are Drought Related

Canyon Lake dam
Overlook Park and the Canyon Dam Service Road are closed through Sept. 30 due to "necessary contract work" by the U,S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Canyon Lake’s only 45% full, but not all Memorial Day weekend closures are drought-related.

Overlook Park

Overlook Park, whose service road atop Canyon Lake dam offers the most spectacular views of the area, is closed.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) said the popular park will remain closed until Sept. 30 due to “necessary contract work” and safety concerns.

The Corps advises visitors to check out North Park campground across the dam from Overlook Park. That area is open for walkers, joggers, runners and cyclists from 8 a.m. to sunset Monday through Thursday.

Boat Ramps

All Canyon Lake boat ramps are closed due to extreme drought, but all Comal County-operated boat ramps can be used to launch non-motorized watercraft like kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and canoes.

However, several county-operated boat ramps are completely closed due to construction upgrades and cannot be used to access the lake or as spots to fish and swim. Driving around barriers is illegal.

They include:

  • Boat Ramp #8 — closed through Tuesday, May 27
  • Boat Ramp #1 — closed through Friday, May 23
