Athletes at Canyon Lake High School say they were inspired by guest speaker Kari Miller, right, who happens to be a three-time Paralympic medalist. Senior Jade Lawless got to meet the hero.

Athletes at Canyon Lake High School had the opportunity to listen to an award-winning athlete and U.S. Army veteran who knows a little something about perseverance and courage.

Three-time paralympian medalist Kari Miller stopped by CLHS on Sept. 25 to share her story.

An athlete her entire life and a cadet in the U.S. Army, Miller had been accepted to officer training school when a tragic vehicle accident changed the course of her life. She lost both legs in the crash. One was one amputated above the knee and the other leg below the knee.

Her mom encouraged her to try wheelchair basketball, but sitting volleyball became her sport of choice.

Miller has gone on to play as a starter for Team USA and was ranked No. 1 libero in the world in 2010.

“She was truly inspiring,” said Jade Lawless, a senior at CLHS and the manager of the volleyball team. “I believe she made a big impact on every single person in the auditorium. She made everyone feel like they can be successful in their own way and to stay positive.”
