Comal County’s Recycling Center says mulch can act as an insulating blanket for plants during a freeze.

Residents can pick up free loads of it at the facility, 281 Resource Dr., New Braunfels, the center said on social media, where its slogan is “if you need mulch, we’ve got you covered!”

Mulch regulates soil temperatures, trapping heat and preventing sudden temperature drops.

It prevents frost heaving, keeping roots from getting pushed out by freezing and thawing cycles.

Mulch helps soil stay damp, reducing the risk of dehydration. It shields roots and crowns and reduces ice damage.
