A Bulverde resident taking his dog for a walk on a leash said a rabid cat attacked his pet.

Although no timeline was reported by public health officials in a statement issued by Comal County on Wednesday, the cat is now the 14th confirmed case of rabies since January.

“Public Health wants residents to be informed so they can know the risks and be safe while enjoying the outdoors,” said Cheryl Fraser, Comal County Public Health Department director.

Local and state agencies are monitoring the situation closely and working to protect public health.

County spokesperson Cary Zayas urges residents to take precautions.

“Confirmed rabies cases this year have included foxes, cats, bats, and a coyote. Residents are reminded: Do not touch or approach sick, injured, or unfamiliar animals. Preventive action and early reporting are critical to stopping the spread of rabies and keeping our community safe.”

To protect themselves and pets, residents are advised to:

  • Avoid contact with wild or unfamiliar animals.
  • Keep pets current on rabies vaccinations.
  • Secure pet food and trash to avoid attracting wildlife.
  • Never handle bats; call authorities if found indoors.
  • Clean any bite or scratch and seek medical attention immediately.
  • Report aggressive or unusual animal behavior.
