Comal County Republican Party Chair Mark Montgomery is one of 28 county GOP chairs who sent an open letter to Republican Party of Texas (RPT) Chair Abraham George Sept. 12, warning him the party’s financial circumstances are “grave and deteriorating.”
The letter was triggered in part by news that the party’s state convention in San Antonio May 23-25 allegedly lost $382,000.
George, who has served as chairman of the Republican Party of Texas since 2024, over-promised and under-delivered financially, the county party chairs claimed.
“Between the last two state conventions, the RPT has lost nearly $500,000 at an event that should be one of our major fundraisers and has historically netted a significant profit,” they said.
The party can survive financially through the Nov. 5 election, but not by much.
One of the county chairs’ main concerns is the party’s Early Vote by Mail (EVBM) program.
“Without a serious, well-funded, statewide EVBM mailer (as we do every cycle) we will get destroyed in mail ballots which will narrow Trump’s margin, threaten Cruz’s reelection, and harm all of our targeted down-ballot races.”
The letter also was signed by Bexar, Guadalupe, Blanco, Hays and Kendall county chairs.
The county chairs also requested a financial audit of this year’s convention, a comprehensive fundraising update detailing George’s performance, and a comprehensive plan Get Out the Vote (GOTV) plan.
They asked George to send the GOTV plan to all county parties and GOP campaigns by Sept. 15, along with a detailed EVBM program.
Comal County Republican Party Chair Mark Montgomery did not respond to a request for comment by MyCanyonLake.com. It is unclear whether George met the Sept. 15 deadline.
