Republicans Ride the Red Wave to Victory in Comal County

Almost all of the Republican elected officials in Comal County were returned to office by voters Nov. 5.

Comal County spokesperson Cary Zayas said 103,740 residents cast ballots. There are 143,783 registered voters in the county.

These are the winners in Comal County. The tallies do not include any votes cast in other counties, although Republicans carried all but one race (to see statewide results, click here):

Incumbent Republican State Sen. Donna Campbell, District 25, returned to office with 75,705 (74.99%) votes. She beat Democrat Merrie Fox, who received 25,255 (25.01%) votes.

Incumbent Republican State Rep. Carrie Isaac, District 73, carried the race with 74,921 (74.48%) votes to Democrat Sally Duval’s 25,672 (25.52%) votes.

District Judge, 22nd Judicial District – Republican R. Bruce Boyer ran unopposed, receiving 82,859 votes.

District Judge, 433rd Judicial District – Republican Dib Waldrip ran unopposed, returning to office with 82,489 votes.

Judge, County County Court-at-Law No. 2 – Republican Charles Stephens ran unopposed, winning 82,392 votes.

Judge, County Court-at-Law No. 3 – Republican Deborah Linnartz Wigington ran unopposed, winning 82,184 votes.

Sheriff – Incumbent Republican Mark Reynolds returns for a third term, winning 76,066 (75.80%) votes to Democrat David Williams’ 24,290 (24.20%) votes.

County Tax Assessor-Collector – Republican Kristen Hoyt ran unopposed, winning 84,104 votes.

County Commissioner, Pct. 1 – Republican newcomer Doug Leecock won with 22,939 (78.70%) votes. Democrat Julie Sanders received 6,209 (21.30%) votes.

Comal County Commissioner, Pct. 3 – Incumbent Republican Kevin Webb returns after winning 10,552 (66.49%) votes. Democrat Tanya Marroquin tailed with 5,319 (33.52%) votes.

Constable, Pct. 1 – Incumbent Republican Charlie Motz ran unopposed, winning 24,784 votes.

Constable, Pct. 2 – Republican Mark Cheatum won 23,392 votes. He was unopposed.

Constable, Pct. 3 – Republican Craig Ackerman ran unopposed, winning 12,290 votes.

Constable, Pct. 4 – Republican Alice (Ali) Flores was unopposed, winning 22,458 votes.

Pct. 1 Commissioner Donna Eccleston decided not to sit for reelection and Pct. 4 Constable Shane Rapp stepped down to care for his wife, who has cancer.

Here are the unofficial results for other races in Comal County only:

  • U.S. Senator – Republican Ted Cruz won with 71,595 (69.49%) votes. Democrat Colin Allred lost with 20,015 (28.16%) votes.
  • U.S, Rep., District 21 – Republican Chip Roy won with 65,897 (73.14%) votes. Democrat Kristin Hook lost with  21,996 (24.41%) votes.
  • U.S. Rep. District 35 – Republican Steven Wright won with 8,009 (68.31%) votes to Democrat Greg Casar’s 3,716 (31.69%) votes.
  • Railroad Commissioner – Republican Christi Craddick beat Democrat Katherine Culbert with 73,535 (72.59%) votes to Culbert’s 23,639 (23.33%) votes.
  • Justice, Supreme Court, Place 2 – Republican Jimmy Blacklock received 75,761 (74.76%) votes to Democrat DaSean Jones’ 25,576 (25.2%) votes.
  • Justice, Supreme Court, Place 4 – Republican John Devine received 75,080 (74.22%) votes to Democrat Christine Vinh Weems’ 26,079 (25.78%) votes.
  • Justice, Supreme Court Place 6 – Republican Jane Bland received 73,578 (72.70%) compared to Democrat Bonnie Lee Goldstein’s 24,605 (24.31%) votes.
  • Presiding Judge, Court of Criminal Appeals – Republican David Schenck won with 75,622 (74.77%) votes. Democrat Holly Taylor received 25,513 (25.29%) votes.
  • Judge, Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 7 – Republican Gina Parker received 75,731 (75.09%) votes. Nancy Mulder lost with 25,118 (24.91%) votes.
  • Judge, Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 8 – Republican Lee Finley won with 76,087 (75.58%) votes. Democrat Chika Anyiam received 24,579 (24.2%) votes.
  • Member, State Board of Education, District 10 – Republican Tom Maynard won with 74,613 (74.28%) votes. Democrat Raquel Saenz Ortiz lost with 25,830 (25.72%) votes.
  • Justice, 3rd Court of Appeals District, Place 2 – Democrat Maggie Ellis became the only Democrat on the Comal ballot to win but only picked up 25.27% of the vote in Comal County. Click here for more information.
  • Justice, 3rd Court of Appeals District, Place 3 – Republican Chari Kelly ran unopposed, earning 46,036 votes.
  • Justice, 3rd Court of Appeals District, Place 5 – Republican Karin Crump ran unopposed, winning 43,340 votes
  • Justice, 3rd Court of Appeals District, Place 6 – Republican Gisela Triana ran unopposed, winning 42,580 votes.

Election night results are unofficial. It takes around a week for counties to tally late-arriving mail-in ballots, ballots from U.S. military or overseas voters, and provisional ballots.

All must be counted or rejected by Nov. 19.
