As his home in the 1700 block of Casa Sierra in Canyon Lake burned to the ground this morning, a retired U.S. Army general raised the American flag to let his neighbors know he and his wife, also a retired military officer, were unharmed.
“It was a good sign for those of us who were worried about him,” said Jill Anne Bruner, who lives near the Spring Mountain home.
The couple’s names have not been publicly released.
Comal County Fire Marshal Kory Klabunde is investigating the blaze.
Canyon Lake Fire/EMS Chief Robert Mikel said firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire around 7 a.m. today.
Upon arrival, crews found flames pushing out of the roof of the home. They were hampered by a narrow, steep driveway which made access difficult.
Water supply was an additional challenge, he said.
Bracken Volunteer Fire Department and Bulverde Spring Branch provided additional water tenders and personnel but the home was a total loss.
The last fire crews left the scene after 3 p.m., Mikel said.
