Performances by Canyon Lake High School theater students in a one-act play called SMASH were a smashing success with UIL judges on Tuesday, March 20.

Students made school history by winning at the district level and advancing to area competition on March 31 at Canyon High School. Students earned four acting awards and an all-star “tech” award.

Theater teacher Rhonda Riali says the way her students work together is amazing.

They rehearsed three days a week, all of Spring Break, Saturdays and “hours and hours and hours” since January.

“They are all very dedicated, they work hard, they’re willing to put in the time that it takes and they’re very talented,” she says.

SMASH, written by Jeffrey Hatcher, is a one-act play about a millionaire socialist.

“A contradiction,” Rhiali says. “It’s a British comedy of manners.”

Rhiali also teaches a math class. Her co-director is Benjamin Matthews, who teaches AP English IV.
