Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is offering up to $2,000 for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons who shot and killed two white-tailed bucks with a bow and arrow in residential New Braunfels areas this week, endangering families living nearby.
Early today (June 27) or late Thursday night (June 26), a deer was shot from the roadway in a residential neighborhood near 1170 Kuehler Ave.
Game wardens determined the animal was shot with an arrow or crossbow bolt tipped with a broadhead. The deer was decapitated — its head likely removed as a trophy — and the carcass and meat were abandoned and wasted.
Either Tuesday night (June 24) or Wednesday morning (June 25), another buck was shot dead from a roadway near 109 Mission Dr. The shooter used a black, green, and white crossbow bolt, possibly of the “Rage” brand, that was tipped with an expandable broadhead.
The buck was left to bleed out, and the carcass and meat also were abandoned and wasted.
TPWD did not say whether the two incidents are related. The department announced up to $1,000 in reward money for information about each deer.
On Facebook, one New Braunfels resident said white-tailed deer are one of the reasons people choose to live in these areas.
“These beautiful deer are not like wild deer in the country, there’s no thrill in hunting them, these deer are pretty much domesticated deer, like pets, fed by the people and loved by the people,” he said. “To hurt one of these is like spear fishing one of those Koi fish at that Japanese garden in San Antonio.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Operation Game Thief at 1-800-792-4263 (GAME).
