The Comal County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) reports a significant increase in the number of vehicle burglaries in the county.

Residents are asked to be aware and take precautions.

Cars parked outside of garages and on the streets outside of homes are the main targets.

Many of these incidents occur in owners’ driveways.

“This issue is widespread, making it even more important to share this post with those you know, both within and beyond our community,” county spokesperson Cary Zayas said on social media.

The average time of these crimes is from 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. Small neighborhoods close to major highways are targeted. Some 83% of all incidents involve unlocked vehicles. Favorite items are wallets, purses, guns and laptops.

CCSO urges residents to:

  • Lock vehicles, even if only stepping away for a moment.
  • Remove valuables like wallets, purses, guns and laptops.
  • Hide remaining items out of sight in the trunk or glove compartment.
  • Park in well-lit areas. Choose secure parking spots.
