Smartwatches and Fitbits are banned in voting areas unless they are needed for medical reasons, Comal County Elections Coordinator Cynthia Jaqua said.

On social media, residents shared their surprise at being asked to remove the devices before casting ballots during early voting in the March 3 Republican and Democratic primary elections.

Like cellphones, smartwatches and Fitbits can record sound or images.

By state law, wireless communications devices cannot be used within 100 feet of voting stations.

The ban also includes digital phones, cameras, phone cameras and sound recorders.

Election judges can require people to deactivate any such device and have the authority to ask people who do not comply with the law to leave the polling place.
