There’s Still Time to Raise the Woof

According to this Canine Classmate, some angels choose fur over wings to promote literacy for students in Canyon Lake elementary schools.

There’s still time to Raise the Woof for Canine Classmates’ Fundraiser & Build Contest.

Registration deadline has been extended to Monday, Nov. 12. Participants are invited to design and build a dog house, cat condo or piece of pet furniture.

An auction and event is scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m. Dec. 2 at Krause’s Biergarten and Cafe, 148 S Castell Ave, New Braunfels. All entries will be displayed at McKenna Children’s Museum.

Canine Classmates is a local non-profit that promotes children’s literacy in elementary schools using reading dogs to improve students’ skills and confidence to create a love of reading and learning.

Final products must be enjoyable for dogs, cats and people alike. Finished houses must be safe, comfortable and practical.

For dogs: Houses should accommodate straw, shavings or other removable bedding; be raised slightly off the ground to keep the floor dry; and have a sheltered area where ‘Fido’ can kick back and relax.

For cats: Use materials that allow cats to crawl, explore and climb; incorporate cubby holes; and make critter accommodations.

Each house will be viewed and touched by the public, so pay special attention to exposed corners, sharp edges and unfinished materials.
