Texas Parks & Wildlife Department ( TPWD) says now’s the time for boaters to make plans to properly store their boats for the off-season.
“Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a new boat owner, following these boat storage tips will ensure your vessel is ready to hit the water come spring,” TPWD said on social media.
Storage Options
1. Indoor Storage: This is the safest option, providing maximum protection from snow, ice, and UV rays. Indoor facilities often have climate control, which helps prevent moisture buildup.
2. Outdoor Storage: If indoor storage isn’t feasible, consider outdoor options. Secure your boat under a canopy or use shrink wrap to shield it from the elements. Just remember to check on it regularly to ensure it’s holding up against the weather.
3. Wet Storage: In milder climates, some boaters choose to leave their boats in the water. If you go this route, be sure to winterize your boat properly to avoid damage from freezing temperatures.
4. Self-Storage: Renting a space at a self-storage facility can be a cost-effective solution. It offers protection from the elements and enhanced security, allowing you to access your boat whenever needed.

• Clean Your Boat: Thoroughly scrub the decks and remove any moisture to prevent mold and mildew.
• Fuel Stabilization: Fill your gas tank and add a fuel stabilizer to prevent oxidation and gum buildup.
• Change the Oil: This helps prevent rust and corrosion during the off-season.
• Battery Care: Remove and charge your battery, storing it in a warm place to avoid freezing.
