Comal ISD Supt. Andrew Kim said today the University Interscholastic League (UIL) is canceling summer workouts, rehearsals, practices and instruction scheduled between July 3-12 over concerns that increased social interactions over the July 4 holiday could spread COVID-19.

Strength-and-conditioning camps scheduled for July 2 are not affected by the decision.

Kim said the guidance only impacts Smithson Valley High School as Canyon, Canyon Lake and Davenport High Schools are taking next week off.

Athletic camps will resume at all four campuses on July 13.

“We have confidence in our current health-and-safety measures, which include having students complete a health screener, checking their temperature, and ensuring that they abide by social distancing and hygiene protocols while at camp,” Kim said on Facebook.

UIL was created by The University of Texas at Austin to provide leadership and guidance to public school debate and athletic teachers. Since 1910 the UIL has grown into the largest inter-school organization of its kind in the world.
