Visitation for lifelong Sattler resident Albert Kenneth Kanz Jr. is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home, 1071 FM 2673 in Canyon Lake.

The 84-year-old died May 10 after being run over by his tractor, Comal County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) spokesperson Jennifer Smith said.

“It is not clear at this point exactly how this has happened, but it appears to be a tragic accident,” she said today. “CCSO detectives will continue to investigate.”

Kanz, born Oct. 27, 1936 in the family home in Sattler, took over the family business, Kanz Store in Sattler in 1970, according to information provided in his obituary. In 1976 he closed Kanz Store and built Kanz Feed & Seed across the road. After a successful start, the business expanded into a bigger facility on FM 2673 in 1982.

Kanz wanted to provide the community with a larger selection of feed supplies.

“Al could be found sitting on the feed sacks visiting with lifelong customers and friends, reminiscing about old times,” according to his obituary. “He enjoyed having his grandkids around and occasionally put them to work around the feed store.”

Kanz retired in 2017 and closed the business.

He spent his remaining years riding his four-wheeler, mowing the grass, feeding the animals and enjoying life.

Kanz is preceded in death by his parents, Albert Sr. and Cora Pape Kanz, and by his brother-in-law Charles Pankey.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Lula Mae Kanz; daughters Glenda Curtis (Michael) and Crystal Pilus (David); grandchildren Jaclyn Doyal (Brad), Megan Curtis, Matthew Pilus, and Amanda Pilus; great-grandchild Mason Doyal; sister Esther Kanz Pankey; brother Bobby Kanz (Michelee); nephew John Pankey (Alice); and nieces Charlotte Alvarez and Jenifer Walker (Kurt).

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Canyon Lake Fire/EMS.
