Comal County commissioners are expected to transfer routine maintenance of lighting for boat ramps #3, 6, 7, and 8 from Water Oriented Recreation District of Comal County (WORD) to the county.
Members of Comal Dark Skies plan to attend Thursday’s Commissioners Court meeting to make sure the reassignment adheres to the county’s Dark Skies Resolution supporting efforts to preserve night skies.
On Dec. 20, 2018, the county agreed to use available technologies for efficient, non-intrusive lighting.
According to Larry Wells, a founding member of Comal Dark Skies, lights must be downward-facing. Horizontal and upward-facing lights do not meet dark skies criteria. Lights must be fully shielded and rated between 3000 to 2700 Kelvin (“warmer” hues).
I was happy to find out that all lighting the county will be installing at the boat ramps and future county projects will be “Dark Sky Friendly”
