Most locations across the Hill Country and into the Coastal Plains will remain below freezing through the day, U.S. National Weather Service Austin-Santonio said today.
A wind advisory has expired but a wind chill warning remains in effect.
Another hard freeze is in store overnight.
However, winds will diminish this evening, making the “feels like” temperatures a bit milder.
Most locations across the Hill Country and into the Coastal Plains will remain below freezing through the day today, with another hard freeze in store for tonight into Saturday. The good news is that winds will diminish this evening, so the “feels like” temperatures won’t be as bad Saturday morning.
For those who are not fans of the cold weather, relief is on the way as the New Year approaches. But freezing temperatures will hang around for a few more mornings.
Warnings in Effect as of 10 a.m.:
- A wind chill warning remains in effect until noon for all of south-central Texas. Dangerously cold wind chills are expected. Dangerously cold wind chill values as low as 10 below zero are possible, with the coldest in the Hill Country and Austin Metro area. Cold wind chills could result in hypothermia if preparations are not taken. Avoid outside activities if possible.
- A hard freeze warning remains in effect today and expires at noon Saturday for portions of south-central Texas. Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, and other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. Temperatures will top out near or below freezing for much of the Hill Country and Austin metro area today for a couple of hours but will drop back into the teens to near 20 degrees on Friday night. Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained or allowed to drip slowly. Those with in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them. Cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
