Comal ISD students and teachers heading back to school will find “an armed law-enforcement presence” at each campus, including all 20 elementary schools.
Board of Trustees President Russ Garner said the district made the decision in April to “provide the level of security that our community desires to have in our schools.”
“Throughout the previous year we heard from parents and staff about their desire to have armed personnel dedicated to each of our elementary campuses,” he said.
Garner wants parents to know the district was one step ahead of the Texas Legislature.
In May, after Comal ISD committed to placing a school resource officer (SRO) at every campus, the state passed a bill requiring all school districts to have armed guards at every school.
“While we applaud the legislature for their work on school safety, as a board we were committed to this concept of having armed personnel in all our schools regardless of whether the legislature mandated it or not,” Garner said.
The only problem is the district can’t find enough qualified people to fill those positions.
Since April, Comal ISD has worked with the Comal County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office and the Bulverde Police Department to secure enough properly trained and licensed law-enforcement personnel.
Until then, the district’s Executive Director of Safety and Security Mario De La Rosa said the district will rotate the SRO’s it does have at elementary campuses until all positions can be filled.
