Canyon Lake received the biggest gift of all this year, eight completely upgraded boat ramps.
The present was made possible by the Canyon Lake Boat Ramps Community Alliance (CLBRCA), an all-volunteer group of residents who persuaded Comal County commissioners to do something about the chaos at overcrowded boat ramps that were built in the 1960s to accommodate locals, not tens of thousands of recreationalists from across the state and country.
Committee members spent the last four years collaborating with county government to significantly improve community access, safety, and parking at Canyon Lake boat ramps.
Projects were financed with American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.
“Merry Christmas, folks,” CLBRCA posted on Facebook today. “Comal County-operated boat ramps improvement projects are 90% complete.
“While we know low water levels and lack of rain persist, much has been accomplished to improve the county-operated boat ramps since the beginning of our community alliance, when we first took our concerns and ideas to the Commissioners Court about how to improve the boat ramps.
“So as we wind down 2024, let’s celebrate the wins!”
Those include parking lot redesign (where needed), paving, striping and stenciling of trailer/non-trailer parking areas; and installation of new signs/updates as well as directional signs at the entrance of boat ramp areas (where needed) marking trailer/non-trailer parking areas at boat ramps #1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 11, 22 and 23.
An archaeological survey/report was requested and completed at Boat Ramp #8 then sent off to the Texas Historical Commission for signing. There were no “significant findings” and work on this ramp’s parking area will kick off in January 2025.
CLBRCA said it has a New Year’s gift for the community, too — Doug Leecock, who spearheaded much of the committee’s work and met weekly with Comal Coumty Judge Sherman Krause for project updates.
After cutting his political teeth on boat ramps, the south side Republican ran for and won the Pct. 1 commissioner ‘s race in November.
Leecock will be sworn in at 10 a.m. Jan. 1, 2025 at the county courthouse, 100 Main Plaza, New Braunfels.
“Doug is one of the founding members of the CLBRCA and we couldn’t be happier to congratulate and support him in this vital role for our county,” the alliance posted on Facebook.
