The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) today released more information about repairs underway at Canyon Lake Dam and apologized for any confusion created by its March 19 statement announcing an extended closure of the popular Overlook Park and Dam Access Road.
These locations closed on Dec. 31, 2024, for contract work but were expected to reopen on March 31.
On March 19, USACE walked that statement back, citing “necessary contract work” and safety concerns that will delay the reopening to Sept. 30.
USACE said two contracts awarded last year were for the installation of a pipe rail fence around Overlook Park’s parking area and four security gates.
“With fence work being constructed along the road, the contract requires COE road (leading into Overlook Park) to be closed. Currently, the contract is a few weeks from being completed,” USACE said.
“The Canyon Dam Service Road contract involves repairs and maintenance to the outlet works bridge. When this contract was awarded, included was a period of performance lasting thru most of this year. Originally, it was felt the work could be completed prior to the entire contract period, which is why we stated the closure would be thru March. When it became evident the entire contract period of performance would be needed, the adjusted closure date was released.”
USACE said it is working hard to complete the work ahead of schedule but will keep the area closed until bridge repairs are completed.
Meanwhile, it advises visitors to the area to check out the North Park campground across from Overlook Park. That area is open for walkers, joggers, runners, and cyclists from 8 a.m. to sunset, Monday through Thursday.
