Lots of money and supplies are pouring into Kerrville from around Texas, but Canyon Lake firefighters want to make sure first responders there — and funeral home employees who are donating body bags and other services — also get the personal financial support they need to keep going as recovery efforts from the July 4-5 flooding along the Guadalupe River continue indefinitely.
A Kerrville Firefighters Fundraiser is planned from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 19 at The Dam Red Barn, 16520 S. Access Rd., Canyon Lake. The event features food and drinks, live music, a silent auction, and a raffle. Donations are welcome.
Union President Charles Richard, who represents Local 4713 Canyon Lake Professional Firefighters Association, is rotating in and out of Kerrville as an active volunteer along with 11 other Canyon Lake firefighters. Comal County ESD No. 3 is covering the expenses of keeping an ambulance and two medics on the ground.
He said Canyon Lake firefighters are backfilling for counterparts who are busy with recovery efforts even though many have lost their homes and other property.
“They need a lot more financial help than people realize,” Richard said.
Funeral homes, especially, are overwhelmed.
“They’re a secondary resource a lot of people don’t think about.”
Today, Kerrville firefighters said victim recovery efforts continue and additional resources from local, state and federal partners continue to deploy to Kerr County as mission efforts become more technical.
