The world marked Veterans Day with parades and solemn ceremonies.
Canyon Lake High School (CLHS) history teacher Brian Hooper led his students onto the battlefield.
The former U.S. Marine utilizes lessons learned from his time in the service to highlight the significance of honoring those who contributed to the creation of history.
“I try to apply my experience in the military to my history lessons, stressing the importance of worldly events and how fortunate it is that my students can sit in a classroom when overseas, many do not get the same opportunity,” he said in a statement released this week by Comal ISD.
Hooper also is a linebacker and track coach at CLHS.
On the field, he teaches the military value of teamwork and encourages his athletes to work together while also emphasizing the importance of never stopping to train for their best.
“I always look at those who served before me, honoring the veterans who went to war and fought for our freedoms. They went through more than I ever did during my service, so I make sure to show my appreciation to them and their families.”
One way he honors veterans is by dedicating instructional time to students with active-duty and veteran family members.
“It is important to take the time to remember those who have served and the sacrifices that have been made,” he said. “Although Veterans Day comes once a year, it is easy to forget the meaning of the holiday.”
