A vintage photo showing the early days of the construction of Canyon Reservoir surfaced in the Comal County Commissioners Court on Thursday, Dec. 18.
Neither commissioners nor staff from the county Engineer’s Office had seen the remarkable image before it was donated by Lucille Tamez.
Construction of Canyon Dam began in 1958 on mile 303 of the Guadalupe River and ended in 1964 according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Fort Worth District, which designed, built and manages the federal asset.
Judge Sherman Krause joked that although Comal County Administrator Tom Hornseth hadn’t seen the image, he was probably in it.
The former county engineer said inlet works are to the left in the image, the middle pad that will become the clay core of the dam is in the center of the image, and the other pads are for backslopes.
