Bulverde Spring Branch (BSB) Fire & EMS recently became the first fire/EMS agency in the United States to earn Obstetric Life Support (OBLS) certification for managing maternal health in pre-hospital settings.

In a social media post today, BSB Fire & EMS said Lt. Benjamin Sutton oversaw training for more than 80% of the agency’s staff.

In an interview with Bulverde’s Front Porch News, he said maternal emergencies are among the most time-critical and complex calls EMS providers face.

“OBLS gives our crews a clear framework, shared language, and the confidence to act decisively when caring for pregnant and postpartum patients, often before they ever reach the hospital,” Sutton said.

Canyon Lake Fire/EMS is not OBLS-certified, Fire Chief Robert Mikkel said.
