Despite recent rain and ice, Comal County soil remains too dry to rescind the burn ban, spokesperson Cary Zayas said in a statement today.
The extension went into effect at 6 a.m.
Today’s index stands at 585 points, according to Water Data for Texas.
By law, county commissioners are required to enact a burn ban when the KBDI reaches 500 points.
“Even when the ground looks damp, grasses and vegetation can dry quickly, especially with wind,” she said. “Fires can spread even faster than many people expect this time of year.”
The county is in extreme drought according to latest data.
The U.S. National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio said there are “great chances” for rain Saturday before dry and warm conditions return.
